Athyrium niponicum 'Burgundy Lace'
Burgundy Lace Fern

fern burgundy lace

Height: 18"

Spread: 12-18"

Part Shade to Shade

Hardiness Zone: 3-8

Cost: $11.00

This is an absolutely beautiful fern. The new fronds are rich burgundy with silver stripes along the veins and at the tips of the pinnae. (Note: This burgundy color takes 2-3 years to develop.) As they mature, the fronds become silvery-green with purple midribs.

This fern maintains its compact form throughout the season, making it an ideal specimen plant for small spaces. It is a Terra Nova introduction.

Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips:
Athyrium grows best in moist soil with a neutral to moderately acidic pH. Partial to full shade is best; some sunlight is necessary to draw out the coloring. To protect the crowns and tender shoots in the spring, it is best to leave the old fronds on the plant over the winter. They can be removed in the spring when the new fronds reach 6 inches tall. If division is necessary, do so in the spring.
